Artist's Statement

Rachael Field doesn’t sign her works. Her works are her signature. Whether the image is a doodle on paper, paint-marks on canvas, live action performance on a stage, or animated cartoon pop video, it is always a Field autograph. Her paintings of sharks the recognisable living symbol of silent, violent, shocking, painful death – are imbued with a fragile vulnerability; rather than scouring the seas searching for innocent victims, it is they who seem to be chased to extinction. Likewise, the human figures in her painted photo-collages of townscapes are hapless, helpless slaves of the system the colluded in creating. And as CGI, in its aim to make the false authentic, only succeeds in conversely making everything unbelievable, so Field makes warts-and-all artworks where you can see the joins. It’s part of a process of demystification, stripping away the fabrication, getting to the heart of the matter.
